A recent matter of news in Australia is that of asylum seekers and refugees. Asylum seekers are people who illegally go to another country, in this case Australia, and illegally seek refuge. Since Kevin Rudd became Prime Minister, he has softened the rules regarding this issue and thus, dozens of boatloads of people have attempted to illegally settle in Australia.
In the past week 250 Tamil Sri Lankans were intercepted in Indonesia. These people fled their country for valid reasons. The Tamils and Burgher Sri Lankans have been in conflict with each other for many years. In the past few months, the conflict ended and many Tamils fled to the north of Sri Lanka.
The Tamils have been discriminated and are not being treated fairly or with the respect they deserve.
These people, along with other asylum seekers, all flee their country for various, mostly valid, reasons. Their countries may be experiencing war, famine, drought or be plagued with sickness. They may be discriminated, as the Tamils are.
Whatever the reason, we should be welcoming to people who have less than us and who are less fortunate and allow them to stay in our country. Australia is a massive country with plenty of room. We should help the needy.
Matthew 25:40 says:
40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
By helping out the people in need, the least fortunate of all people, we are exalting God.
During the next few days think about the people in need and help those who need help.
I would love to know your opinion on the asylum seekers. Do we think we should welcome them into your country? Not just Australia, but America, England, France, New Zealand, wherever you live?
For clarification, no, I am not a Tamil, but a Burgher.
